- Implementing the National Payment Strategy
- Enacting the laws and regulations and publishing the guidelines and business manual to oversight and monitor the payment system
- Promoting and overseeing a safe, sound and efficient payment system
- Operating and monitoring the payment market infrastructure, CBM-NET system and MPU by overseeing the operations concerning the payment and settlement system
- Acting as lender of last resort for banks
- Maintaining and managing the international reserves of the State
- Issuing securities and buying from, selling to and dealing in such securities with financial institutions and the public
- Issuing short-term loans and advances
- Providing financial and liquidity assistance to subsidiaries and foreign banks branches
- Dealing in financial market as it deems necessary
- Acting as financial advisor and fiscal agent to the Government
- Buying, holding, selling and dealing in treasury bills and other securities issued or guaranteed by foreign governments or foreign central banks or in shares and securities issued by the international financial institutions and its international associations
- Opening and maintaining accounts with intergovernmental financial institutions, central banks, monetary authorities, and financial institutions outside the State
- Accepting deposits of the Government and making payments on behalf of the Government against such accounts.
- Providing loans and advances to the Government with the approval of Pyidaungsu Hluttaw
- Purchasing and selling government securities hold by financial institutions and the general public
- Opening accounts with and accepting deposits from financial Institutions
- Preparing financial statements at the end of each month and year and submitting its annual report to Office of the Auditor General of the Union and the Government
- Acting as a banker to the Government by maintaining the accounts of the Government
